A 31 year old male has been arrested by Kandal Province Police after SISHA investigators were able to help identify the offender who raped an 8 year old girl. The male is currently under police custody awaiting trial. The offender was caught by the mother in her daughter’s bedroom, it is suspected that the offender may have even spent the night.
SISHA were contacted by Kandal Province Police to give assistance to the young victim and aid in apprehending the offender. The SISHA investigation team were quick to respond and worked with local police to interview the young girl in an appropriate manner to identify the offender then went to work on tracking down and arresting the male offender.
Our after-care assistant was deployed with the investigation team to offer immediate rehabilitation services and help the young girl and her family through this horrific ordeal. It is paramount that any further trauma or re-victimization is minimized during the investigation and that the family are aware of how SISHA is determined to work within its power to deliver justice as swiftly as possible.
Knowledge that the perpetrator of such heinous crimes has been arrested and will face criminal charges is the first step in rehabilitating victims and their family. Young victims are often confused about what has happened to them, it is therefore imperative that SISHA’s after-care assistant is on the scene straight away to console and council the victim to ensure that she understands that this was wrong and in no way her fault.
ECPAT’s yearly ‘Database Report on Sexual Trafficking, Exploitation and Rape in Cambodia’ incidence of reported rape in Cambodia is increasing and that a growing number of reported victims are children.
