Graduating towards Empowerment: 30 Youths Graduate from SISHA’s 3rd Youth Legal Rights Course

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA – On June 26th, 30 smiling young boys and girls graduated from SISHA’s third Youth Legal Rights Class (YLR). For the last eight weeks, the youths had been learning about important topics such as human rights, domestic violence, trafficking, the Cambodian legal system and many other subjects. Meet the Inspiring Hope Scholarship Recipients!

It’s been 7 months since awarding Sovanny, Sopheak, and Chenda, the most outstanding students from our Youth Legal Rights Courses in 2010, with university scholarships. The three young women have been studying subjects such as computer skills, statistics, political science, history, and public administration as a foundation for their law degrees. They are now well into their second semester, learning more about how they can be utilized as educated Khmer women to make much needed change in their local communities and Cambodia as a whole. Five Men convicted for the Gang Rape of two Young Girls

In 2010, the Battambang police transferred a file to SISHA’s aftercare and legal teams regarding the tragic gang rape of two 14-year-old girls. The police investigation led to the arrest of three of the six male suspects. Three are still at large; SISHA and the Police are actively trying to bring them to justice.

The tragic incident occurred in an empty field of a remote village of the Battambang Province in early 2010. Chantha and Ravy*, the two victims, say their new friend Dara* had invited them to meet with him, but the two girls were far from knowing what he had in mind. Read the entire story...
